Police pursued a vehicle for 50 minutes across South Auckland before abandoning the chase today.

The vehicle was stopped by police at about 11.55am in the Patumahoe area for a routine check because of the manner in which it was being driven.

The driver fled from the scene in the car and was pursued by police for about 50 minutes.

The pursuit was abandoned in Pukeawa, and the car was later located by the Eagle air support unit up a driveway surrounded by bush.

A police spokesman said ground staff were directed to the abandoned vehicle.

The vehicle's driver is yet to be located.
