Fire fighters in Invercargill are battling a large house fire this evening.

The blaze was so large it could be seen in the distance as crew approached the house at 253 Crinan shortly after 10pm.

A fire service spokeswoman said four fire trucks were on scene working to extinguish the fire.

"It's burning well and it's well involved" she said. "We saw it en route."

The spokeswoman said there was no-one in the house when fire crew arrived.

"It's unclear if they weren't home or if they managed to get out."
