A pair of taggers are recovering in hospital after a failed getaway from law enforcement saw them fall down a cliff.

Security guards spotted the two men at the rear of a derelict building site in Remuera around 1am this morning, police said.

Sergeant Dave Christoffersen said when the guards approached the two men "legged it" over a fence.

Unfortunately, at the bottom of the fence was a 10m drop and both were injured in the fall.

Police, the fire service and ambulance officers were called to help the pair.

One sustained a serious injury and the other a moderate injury. Both were taken to Auckland Hospital.
