Police are seeking a Head Hunters prospect after a man was wounded in a shooting in south Auckland this morning.
A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life in Middlemore Hospital after the incident in Mangere about 3am.
Police were called to a Yates Rd address after receiving a call from St John ambulance.
This afternoon, police said they were seeking Billy Matara, 36, who they believe can assist police with their investigation.
Matara is a prospect for the eastern chapter of the Head Hunters motorcycle gang.
Police are warning he is considered dangerous and may be carrying a firearm. They say he should not be approached.
Matara is using a purple 1998 Holden Commodore, registration number JDY678.
Anyone who knows his whereabouts is asked to call 111 immediately.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin McNaughton said police were trying to build a picture of the circumstances of this morning's incident and details were still unclear.
"We need anyone with information to come forward and help us locate Mr Matara."
Earlier, Mr McNaughton said police wanted to reassure the Mangere community they were doing everything possible to identify those behind the crime.
"We have a number of detectives working on this investigation but need anyone who can help police to please get in touch."
The shooting is on the same street where three people were shot in January.
A group of about 40 people had been drinking in the Yates Rd reserve when a person with a gun fired three shots at the group and then fled.
The victims - aged 16, 22, and 24 - suffered leg injuries. One also suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen.
