Two young children were injured in a car crash in Waikato this evening.

A man and two children - a girl aged 2 and an 8-month-old baby - were injured after the car they were in smashed into an embankment on State Highway 30 near their home in Benneydale, the Waikato Westpac Rescue helicopter service said.

The man suffered chest and leg injuries and was flown to Waikato Hospital with the 2-year-old girl, the service said.

"The child was transported as a precaution, because although she appears uninjured, she was lethargic and did not appear to be responding appropriately."

It was initially suspected one of the occupants had a spinal injury, the service said.

The crash happened at 6pm this evening.
