A large crowd has gathered at the scene of a house fire in Te Puke this afternoon.

Firefighters are still hosing down the house in Harris St where fire has burned through a shed and spread into the home.

Flames could be seen licking out of the windows as firefighters arrived shortly after 3.30pm.

The smoke could be seen billowing from kilometres away.

A reporter at the scene said several police officers were there, cordoning off the area to help the three crews of firefighters tackle the fire.

A large crowd had gathered, she said.

It was not known where the home's occupant was, she said.
