People are being asked to look in their backyards for anything unusual after a man was seriously assaulted on a Christchurch street overnight.

Police said at about 8.45pm a 52-year-old male was attacked on the corner of Ferry Rd and Palinurus Sts.

The victim was taken to Christchurch Hospital for treatment.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen an altercation take place or found any "items of interest" in the backyards of homes close to the intersection to come forward.
