A man is dead after being struck by a car on a rural stretch of State Highway 1 in Northland this evening.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stephanie Hudson, of Whangarei, said ambulance officers treated the man, but he died at the scene. The sole occupant of the car was not injured.

It is understood the dead man was middle-aged.

The police serious crash unit is at the scene on State Highway 1 near the Mower Rd intersection at Kauri, 13 kilometres north of Whangarei. The section of road is closed, with diversions in place from the Apoutu Rd and Jordan Valley Rd intersections, Hudson said.

Emergency services were called about 7.30pm, she said.

Firefighters from the Hikurangi Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Whangarei Fire Brigade also attended.

Peter Dempster lives nearby and told the New Zealand Herald he went to investigate after seeing flashing lights. He was told a person had been hit by a car, but nothing else.
