A person is in Rotorua Hospital with moderate injuries after the car they were travelling in hit a bank and ended up in a ditch near Rotorua.

The injured person was a passenger in the vehicle and was thrown from the car when the accident happened about 3.45pm today on a straight stretch of State Highway 5 about 8.5km north of the Ngongotaha roundabout.

According to a police press release the car rolled and traffic had been stopped.

When the Rotorua Daily Post arrived traffic was flowing in both directions and the vehicle showed no obvious signs of having rolled.

A late model white people-mover style vehicle was the only vehicle involved.

Rotorua police could not be contacted for further comment.
