A photograph circulated in the media helped police identify a man accused of grabbing a woman and trying to kiss her in downtown Wellington.

The alleged assault happened just before 3pm on April 4 and police this week sought the public's help.

Yesterday, thanks to the image released by police, a 28-year-old Wellington man was charged with the assault and will appear in the city's district court next week, police said.

It is alleged the man approached a woman, who was a stranger, and assaulted her with "intimate overtones" on Lambton Quay.

"The investigator received two nominations which were positive and the offender also came forward to talk with police. I can reassure the community that police will thoroughly investigate offending of this nature," Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy said.

"I'd also like to thank those members of the community who assisted in identifying the offender, which led to his arrest."
