Police are seeking witnesses to a crash which left a motorcyclist in a critical condition after being hit by a car on Customhouse Quay, Wellington.

The motorcyclist is now in a stable condition at the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital, a Wellington hospital spokesman confirmed.

The accident happened around 5.20pm yesterday.

A police spokesman said police were not completely sure what had caused the crash but it seemed it "may have been a merging issue".

Sergeant Simon Paterson of Wellington Road Policing would like to hear from any witnesses to this crash, particularly in regards to the movements of a red sedan, described as possibly a 4-door sedan travelling north-bound in the middle-lane on The Quays.

Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Wellington Central Police on 04 381 2000 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
