A truck which broke down on the centre northbound land on the harbour bridge has now been cleared and congestion is easing.
Auckland Transport's live traffic maps show vehicles are flowing freely from Khyber Pass to Fanshawe St, then traffic is moderate heading over the bridge.
Motorists are being warned that heavy congestion remains in the area and they should expect delays or avoid the area if possible.
One woman stuck in the congestion told the Herald it took her one-and-a-half hours to get from Remuera to Takapuna.
"Kids are screaming in the back. We are going to be late for the show at the Pumphouse. Coffee date is long over."
Meanwhile, Quay St in the CBD and the Gillies Ave northbound onramp are heavily congested with traffic moving 10km/hr or less.
Earlier one motorist in the congestion said the motorway is "gridlocked".
Another motorist said it took 15 minutes to move from Beaumont St onto the motorway.
"We are barely even crawling. All three lanes going north plus the merging lanes are moving at less than 5km/h."
