Police are seeking a man who grabbed a woman by the waist and tried to kiss her in downtown Wellington this week.

The alleged indecent assault happened on Lambton Quay about 2.30pm on Monday.

Police said the woman was walking towards Wellington Railway Station when the man approached and assaulted her.

The man, thought to be in his 20s, is described as a skinny Caucasian, about 1.77m tall, with pale blue eyes and short brown hair.

He has a distinctive accent and was last seen wearing a maroon dress shirt and grey dress pants.

Police believe the man may be frequenting the Wellington CBD area.

Anyone who sees the man or knows who he is is asked to Constable Natana Collier-Repia on 04 381 2000.
