Former politician John Banks has been reinstated as a Justice of the Peace after the quashing of his conviction for filing a false electoral return.
"This is just another step in putting a lot of wrongs right after a long, time-wasting and particularly nasty judicial jihad that should have never happened," the 69-year-old said.
Banks, a former National cabinet minister, Act leader and Auckland City mayor, said there was still some washing up to be done after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction last year.
He is planning to go to the High Court to recover $190,000 in costs at the High Court trial where he was found guilty of filing a false electoral return in respect of donations from Kim Dotcom and SkyCity during a mayoral bid at the first Super City elections in 2010.
Since the High Court trial, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction based on new evidence.
Banks said he voluntarily handed in his Justice of the Peace position when he was charged and had it reinstated this week.
He said he had been a JP for about 14 years and enjoyed the "bread and butter" but important role of certifying documents and swearing affidavits.
There are about 6800 JPs in New Zealand whose duties include taking oaths and declarations, witnessing signatures and judicial functions like hearing bail applications and conducting traffic courts.
