It'll pay to get out and about today if you're in the top half of the North Island as sunny skies last for just one more day.

MetService duty forecaster Jasmine Kennedy said it would be fine in northern and eastern parts of the North Island with temperatures sitting in the early 20s.

Auckland was expected to reach 21C, Tauranga 22C and Napier 23C.

The lower North Island could expect to cloud over with drizzle starting to fall later today.

Wet weather would start to make its mark across the South Island today.

MetService had issued a heavy rain warning for Fiordland, Westland and Southland with rain gradually spreading up both sides of the South Island today.

Christchurch would enjoy a warm and mainly fine 24C day while Dunedin would hit 20C but be cloudy.

It was forecast to reach the North Island tomorrow.
