Police find car linked to Ocean Heke's death

Police have found the car that is believed to be linked to the death at Otorohanga of Ocean Heke and are now talking with two young people about it.

The 17-year-old's body was found on the side of the road on Sunday morning, hours after she left the 18th birthday of a good friend.

A scene examination indicted a car may have been involved.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said that car has now been found and will undergo an forensic examination today.

Two young people are now helping police with inquiries in relation to the car.

ONE News reported a couple was seen arguing at a party on Main North Road, before both getting into a car that subsequently lost control.

ONE News said it is believed alcohol was a factor in the crash and the driver was unlicensed.

Ocean's family said news the car involved in the incident has provided some relief but it would not bring back Ocean, who was also known as Lovey.

"We have a lot of words we could say to them. No words can describe what we are going through," said her cousin Tamie Tapara.

Mr Patterson said a forensic post mortem confirmed Ocean's injuries were consistent with being hit by a motor vehicle. Her body will be returned to her family later today.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has information about this incident or who may have witnessed any collisions on Main North Road (SH 3) between 3am and 7am Sunday morning."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 07 8586200 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
