The woman who died after she was struck by a car has been named as Delia Grace Williams, police confirmed.

The 55-year-old woman died after being hit on Garden Rd in Northland about 9.15pm on Tuesday.

Detective Sergeant Haley Ryan said a 58-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court this morning charged with assault with a blunt weapon and excess breath alcohol.

He has been remanded in custody and will reappear on Monday.

Resident at Garden Rd, Dina Ngaira, who lives across the road from the scene, said she heard a woman screaming that evening.

"I thought it was coming from a TV at first but it was a woman screaming," she said.

"It sounded like it was coming from just outside my house."

Ms Ngaira said she also heard a man also screaming. She then heard a car screech down the road.

Police ask anyone who knew Ms Williams and has information about her background or the days leading up to her death to contact Wellington Police on 04 381 2000.
