A man has been charged with assault with a vehicle after a woman was struck dead in Wellington last night.
The 55-year-old woman died after being hit on Garden Rd in Northland about 9.15pm.
Detective Sergeant Haley Ryan said a 58-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court this morning charged with assault with a blunt weapon and excess breath alcohol.
He has been remanded in custody and will reappear on Monday.
Resident at Garden Rd, Dina Ngaira, who lives across the road from the scene, said she heard a woman screaming yesterday evening.
"I thought it was coming from a TV at first but it was a woman screaming," she said. "It sounded like it was coming from just outside my house."
Ms Ngaira said she also heard a man also screaming. She then heard a car screech down the road.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the assault with a blunt weapon charge related to the car.
She would not confirm whether a homicide investigation had been launched.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the woman being hit by the vehicle, and say further charges may follow.
A scene examination was continuing and police were speaking with witnesses.
Wellington Free Ambulance staff last night found the woman in a critical condition. She died before she could be transported to hospital.
