A 9-year-old child and a man have been injured after a serious crash involving a car and truck north of Auckland this morning.

Emergency services, including the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter, descended on Wainui Rd, near Silverdale, after a vehicle crossed the centreline.

Police said the male driver of the car was seriously injured and had been airlifted by rescue helicopter to Auckland City Hospital for treatment.

A child travelling in the same car was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police said one of the vehicles had crossed the centreline resulting in the impact.

A fire service spokesman said the accident happened at 8.30am. One person was trapped in their wrecked vehicle and had to be cut out.

Auckland Transport said traffic was being diverted and motorists were warned to avoid the area.

Diversions were in now place on either side of the accident at Wainui and Gervin Rds to the east and Wainui and Waitoki Rds to the west.
