Christchurch City Council has temporarily closed several freedom camping sites in the region.

Some community boards are calling Christchurch City Council's decision to close all freedom camping sites temporarily a sensible move.

The council closed its camping site at French Farm yesterday, after a report came back showing contamination of the beach. Four other sites will be shut to campers starting next Wednesday.

Addington Park car park has been a popular spot for campers, with overcrowding and littering the main issue, said Paul McMahon, Spreydon-Heathcote community board chair.

He's not sure if he'd like to see it reopened in the future,

The sites will be closed to campers until at least May.
