Police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to grab a young Hutt Valley girl as she walked to school with her friend on Monday.
Hutt Valley Police detective senior sergeant Glenn Barnett said a 52-year-old man was arrested yesterday in relation to an incident involving two girls on their way to school.
He said the man has been charged with assaults child and was due to appear in the Hutt Valley District Court next Tuesday.
The man had been bailed to a private address until his next appearance.
Police said yesterday's arrest came as a combined result of thorough investigative work by police and strong support from the school and local community.
"We would like to assure the public that very early on in our enquiries we had a strong indication of who the suspect was.
"While we cannot go in to details, we are confident that there is no on-going risk to children in the area in relation to this incident," said Mr Barnett.
Police urged all parents to regularly speak to their children about staying safe.
Hutt Intermediate parents were alerted about the incident through a newsletter sent home with pupils on Monday night.
A safety message of what a child should do if approached by a stranger was also posted on the school's facebook page.
