At least two people have been hurt in a crash involving a car and a tractor in Northland.

One person is in a serious condition. The other person's condition is not known.

Sergeant Tai Patrick, of Whangarei Police, said emergency services were called to the scene, on the Awanui Straight, just north of Kaitaia, at about 1.45pm.

The person in a serious condition had been trapped for some time and the Fire Service was required to cut them out.

Emergency services are still at the scene and motorists have been warned to avoid the area or expect delays.

A northern fire communications spokesman said the patient was taken to Kaitaia Hospital for treatment.
