Firefighters are working to remove a person trapped in a car after it crashed into a house in Napier this evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident on Geddis Avenue at 10.35pm.
The car hit a gas main at the house, causing it to burst, a fire communications spokeswoman said.
Police, fire and ambulance services are at the scene.
A police spokesman said there were four people in the car.
All have injuries - the worst is a broken leg.
He believed speed was a factor in the crash.
Police at the scene said they believed two cars had been racing when one lost control around a corner and careered into a brick house.
Gas from the ruptured pipe could be smelt from up to 150 metres away, and some neighbours are believed to have been evacuated from their homes due to the leakage.
