Speeding car crashes into laundromat

A car driven by a suspected drink-driver crashed into a laundromat in Portage Rd, Papatoetoe, late last night, causing extensive damage.

A police commander at the scene said the vehicle was being driven at very high speed along Station Rd when it went out of control and veered across the Portage Rd/Gray Ave intersection.

He said no one was taken to hospital, and the occupants were very lucky to escape serious injury.

"Anyone who drinks and drives is a bloody idiot."

Videographer Daniel Hines said police fearing a gas leak blocked off Portage Rd to all traffic.

Water was spewing out from the shop.

Hines said the female owner of the laundromat turned up at the shop crying and visibly angry.

A guard would be posted at the scene overnight.

He said he saw the police taking a person away.
