John Banks, horse manure, 2014

The day the former MP and Auckland mayor was to stand trial for knowingly filing a false electoral return, veteran protester Castislav "Sam" Bracanov hurled horse manure over him. Bracanov said it had something to do with a fine he received for throwing manure at royalty when Mr Banks was police minister in the 1990s.

Dani Alves, banana, 2014

The Barcelona footballer had a banana tossed at him by a racist fan in a Spanish league match. Alves picked it up, took a bite and continued with the game.

George W Bush, shoes, 2008

The president of the United States was the target of an upset Iraqi journalist, who hurled both shoes at a press conference. The president showed good reactions to duck out of the way.

John Boscowin, lamington, 2009

This wasn't thrown as such, but during a candidates' meeting for the 2009 Mt Albert byelection at Unitec, a student placed a lamington on his head. Mr Boscowin wasn't put off and continued speaking.

Don Brash, mud, 2004

The National leader received a frosty reception at Waitangi shortly after his one law for all speech. "Not a bad shot," said Dr Brash, as he wiped the clod from his face.
