A security guard has been robbed at gunpoint outside a Whakatane supermarket this morning, police say.

The alleged robbery occurred about 11am outside Pak n' Save on King St in Kopeopeo. No one was hurt, but an unconfirmed amount of cash was taken.

Police believe more than one person was involved and at least one vehicle is linked to the incident.

A scene examination has been completed and police taking witness statements. They are appealing for any other witnesses to contact Whakatane police on (07) 308 5255.

"There were a number of members of the public around when the robbery occurred and police are appealing for anyone with any information or images on their phones that might assist the investigation to make contact at the earliest opportunity."
