The great mystery surrounding an unidentifiable pink object appears to have been solved.
Aucklander Daniel Underway discovered a picture on his cellphone from three years ago that showed a strange pink object in the sky.
Several Herald readers have suggested the object is probably a street lamp.
Overexposure seems to have made the lamp appear pink and removed the lamppost from the photo.
Mr Underway didn't know what it was and didn't remember taking the photo. He believed it was taken on Fendalton Rd, near the Avon River, in Christchurch.
"I wish there was a good backstory but there isn't," he said.
"I was going through pictures on my phone a couple of days ago and freaked out.
"I took the photo in Christchurch in 2012 but I don't remember taking it.
"When people see a strange object like that they often hear a loud noise or something like that but I don't remember a noise."
The photo was captured on December 9, 2012.
"When I saw the photo, I thought 'that's strange; that's not normal'. I have no idea what it is. If anyone has any idea, I'd be grateful.
"I've showed the photo to a few family members and friends, and we're all curious."
A zoomed-in version of the photo appears to show the branding "S 150 C" on the bottom of the object.
The New Zealand Defence Force has been contacted to see if the UFO was an object included in a training exercise.
