Police are hunting for a silver Nissan Primera in relation to the murder of a man in Kaitaia on New Year's Eve.

Lee Rata, 35, was assaulted on Bonnett Rd around 11pm. A member of the public found the badly injured man on the side of the road.

Mr Rata was taken to Kaitaia Hospital and then to Whangarei Hospital but he died around lunchtime on New Year's Day.

Police were now looking for a silver 1994 Nissan Primera, registration YD7680.

"This is a vehicle of interest and we want to hear from anyone who saw this vehicle between Thursday, December 31, and Sunday, January 3, in the Kaitaia or Moerewa area," Detective Inspector Kevin Burke said.

"We have been receiving great assistance from the public and the investigation is progressing."
