Police have now identified a man who stalked a woman on a train before assaulting her as she walked home from the station in Auckland.

"We would like to thank members of the public and media for their assistance."

The female victim was followed by a man "over a prolonged period of time" on Wednesday night, including on a train between Britomart and Middlemore Hospital, before she was grabbed from behind in Mangere at about 10.30pm.

She was walking home from Middlemore Station at the time and managed to escape after a short struggle.

Auckland Transport (AT) has been helping Police with the case today, an AT spokesman said.

He said AT puts security on a number of train services, particularly in the evenings.

The man was described as being a male Polynesian, about 30 years old, 185cm tall and of a large build.
