A man remains in custody after armed police were called following an incident involving a firearm in Milton last night.

The Armed Offenders Squad and local police were called to a rural property in Barnes Rd, Circle Hill, at 11pm where they found a 56-year-old man brandishing a firearm.

Earlier reports the man had fired towards another person at the place were not correct, and no shots had been fired during the incident, Southern District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Brian Benn told the Otago Daily Times this morning.

More firearms were found at the property, and police left the scene at 2.30am, Mr Benn said.

Although no charges had been laid, further inquiries were taking place in Milton today.
