A New Zealand-born Australian deportee has been arrested upon arrival at Auckland Airport over a historical sex offence against a young girl.
The 29-year-old man was recently returned to New Zealand after Australia tightened its laws relating to non-citizen offenders in December last year.
Another man was arrested for an alleged burglary last week after returning under the new law and police are understood to be looking for a man who returned in July.
Court documents show the man on historic charges is accused of sexually violating and indecently assaulting a Hastings girl aged under 12 over a two-year period between August 2008 and August 2010.
He was due to appear in the Hastings District Court on November 25, and yesterday -- but he has not yet appeared.
He was deported to New Zealand from minimum security prison Karnet Prison Farm, south of Perth.
A police spokeswoman said she was unable to comment as the matter was before the courts.
Australia's tougher stance on foreign criminals requires non-citizens who have been sentenced to a year or more in jail detained and deported.
Many of those sent back had lived in Australia most of their lives and have few or no support networks in New Zealand.
On November 9, riots at Christmas Island detention centre involved deportees, including Kiwis, and on November 18 New Zealand Parliament urgently passed a law change to allow for deportees to be monitored as if they had served time here.
The first batch of 12 deportees from Christmas Island arrived the following day.
On November 25, Labour leader Andrew Little appeared in front of two Australian select committees to highlight the lack of rights for Kiwis, the day before a second batch of 11 deportees arrived.
Upon arrival at the airport deportees are processed under the Returning Offenders (Management and Information) Act 2015.
As at October 31, there were 213 New Zealanders in Australian detention centres (190 men, 23 women) - the second-largest nationality group behind Iran.
As of yesterday, 223 deportees had arrived in New Zealand from Australia since the beginning of this year.
Another recent deportee, Patrick Sylva, aged in his mid-20s, is wanted by police in New Zealand.
And on Friday, a 25-year-old New Zealander deported from Australia earlier this month was arrested for an alleged burglary in Hamilton.
