A month-old baby was rushed to hospital with bleeding to the brain after allegedly being beaten by her father.
The little girl is in Auckland's Starship Hospital after the attack in Waitara in Taranaki, according to Stuff.co.nz.
The assault is reported to have happened on Friday while the girl's family were in town for a gathering.
The baby's 29-year-old father was arrested about 2am on Sunday at a Waitara address, where he was with the baby's mother. He was charged with injuring with intent to injure, wounding with reckless disregard and breaching a protection order, reported the website. He has been remanded in custody.
The child's mother and other family members are reported to have taken the baby, who was born on October 7, to the Waitara Medical Centre and left her there.
The baby was then taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in a serious condition before being transferred to Starship Hospital.
A spokesman for the Auckland District Health Board confirmed the baby girl had been transferred to Starship Children's Hospital on Friday.
He told the Herald tonight the girl, who had initially been in a paediatric intensive care unit, was now in a stable condition and "out of danger.''
The spokesman would not confirm whether any family members were with staying with the child; only that she was now in a general ward.
