The body of a missing fisherman has been found inside the wreckage of FV Jubilee on the seabed.
Canterbury Police deployed a team of divers and a remote-operated vehicle to scour the "item of interest" found off the Canterbury coast.
FV Jubilee has been missing since its crew sent out a distress signal after they were caught in a brutal storm a week ago, on October 18.
Fishermen Jared Reese Husband, 47, of Timaru, Paul Russell Bennett, 35, of Motueka, and 55-year-old Terry Donald Booth, Nelson region, are presumed dead.
Sergeant Phil Simmonds said improved weather on Saturday meant the recovery effort could continue.
"In order to take advantage of an improvement in the weather off-shore a commercial vessel was hired to take the team to site this morning.
"The team saw, what is believed to be, one deceased inside the FV Jubilee during the ROV survey.
"The person seen on the ROV footage has not yet been recovered or identified and police will not speculate on which of the three crew it may be," Mr Simmonds said.
He said police were in "close contact" with all three fishermen's families.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
Police were providing regular updates to the families and employer - and victim support were also involved, he said.
A number of "build-up dives" were necessary for the navy's operational diving team to complete over a couple of days before entering the wreck, he said.
"The safety of those involved in the recovery phase is paramount," Mr Simmonds said.
The underwater recovery aims to locate and return the missing men to their families.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has an ongoing inquiry into the sinking of the FV Jubilee and a police investigation is continuing.
No further information would be provided on the recovery phase until the "build-up" dives were complete, police said.
