Hokitika locals are buzzing over whether a local bought last night's winning Lotto Powerball ticket worth a cool $6.5 million.
The winning ticket was bought at Hokitika New World in the West Coast town.
Lotto spokeswoman Emilia Mazur said it was the fourth time this year that a major jackpot has been struck, with millionaires being made in Auckland, Nelson, Palmerston North and now Hokitika.
New World worker Cheantelle Maxted said nobody had yet turned up to claim the prize.
"People have been excited and wondering who it is."
The prize was made up of $6 million from Powerball First Division and $500,000 from Lotto First Division.
Fitzherbert St Four Square owner Shirley Grant said hopefully it was a local holding onto the prize.
"The town's buzzing. Good on them."
BP to Go worker Natasha Molloy said customers had been wondering who the lucky winner was.
"They're reasonably excited."
The winner might not be aware of their good fortune yet, she said.
"Heaps of them have gone home to check their tickets. It's pretty exciting."
Sharing in yesterday's good fortune was a Lotto player from Whakatane, who won a $500,000 share of Lotto's First Division. The winning ticket was bought from Whakatane New World.
Strike Four was won by two players in Te Awamutu and Te Anau who won $60,442 each. The winning tickets were sold at Te Awamutu Countdown and Te Anau Four Square.
Andrew and Glenys from Wellington spun and won $175,000 with the Winning Wheel on the live Lotto draw.
Anyone who bought a ticket from any of the draw's winning stores was advised to write their name on the back of the ticket and check it immediately at any Lotto outlet, online at mylotto.co.nz or through Lotto's ticket-checker app.
