Five people were injured - two of them seriously - in a crash in the Waioeka Gorge as they travelled between Opotiki and Gisborne this morning.
Bay of Plenty police say the two-car collision occurred just after 10am about two kilometres from the Opotiki end.
Emergency services - two rescue helicopters, three ambulances and a fire appliance - were quick to attend.
Two people suffered serious injuries and three suffered moderate injuries.
The five injured were taken to Whakatane Hospital.
The road was shut at the Opotiki and Gisborne ends of the gorge, but has now been re-opened.
State Highway Two remains down to one lane as police carry out a scene examination.
