A 3-year-old girl died after she was hit by a car driven by a relative in West Auckland this morning.
Police said emergency services were called to a home in Te Atatu Peninsula just after 7.30am.
She was taken to hospital by ambulance but died after arriving.
"A police investigation is now underway by CIB staff and the Waitemata serious crash unit," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.
The child's family were being supported by police and Victim Support, she said.
Detective Senior Sergeant James Bothamley said: "Our thoughts are with the child's family. This is an incredibly sad incident for everyone involved."
The driveway where the incident took place this morning remained cordoned off with police tape.
The scene - at the end of a cul-de-sac in Te Atatu Peninsula - was quiet, with just one police car present, just before midday.
Next door neighbours were not home this afternoon, and neighbours across the road said they hadn't seen or heard anything this morning.
