A 3-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a vehicle in Lower Hutt yesterday, police say.
The boy was hit outside the Hutt City Kindergarten Association on Naenae Road about 3pm.
He was transferred from Hutt Valley Hospital to Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit last night, police spokesman Nick Bohm said.
"He is making a very good recovery and will be transferred to a general ward today."
The boy was unrestrained and unsupervised in a vehicle parked on the side of the road, while his 19-year-old brother was at a nearby address, he said.
"The child has made their way out of the car and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
"The driver of that vehicle is very distressed by what has happened and we are continuing to support them," he said.
