A 32-year-old man accused of firing a gun at a police officer in Tauranga last night is behind bars while police inquiries continue.

Donny Falakoa, 32, of Auckland, who appeared in Tauranga District Court today, faced a charge of using a firearm against a law enforcement officer.

Police say a pursuit begun on State Highway 2 near Katikati about 8.45pm last night.

Police allege the shooting incident happened near Baypark roundabout in Mount Maunganui as a constable exited their vehicle.

Police opposed bail.

Falakoa, who is yet to enter pleas to the charges, was remanded in custody by consent until August 11.

Police said further charges were likely.
