A 16-year-old girl was picked up off an Auckland street and sexually and physically assaulted for three hours, police say.

The girl was walking near the Glen Eden shops about 11pm last Friday when she accepted a ride from a man in a car.

He drove to the carpark of Ken Maunder Park off Binsted Road in New Lynn, where he sexually and physically assaulted her.

He then drove to Victor Street near Great North Road in Avondale where the physical and sexual assault continued.

He eventually left the girl at the main carpark of Auckland Zoo off Motions Road in Western Springs about 2am.

Police were alerted soon after.

Detective Sergeant Scott Armstrong of Waitemata police said the girl had needed medical treatment. She was being supported by her family, police and support services.

The car was described as a silver four-door hatchback and its driver a bearded Indian man in his 30s.

"We want to hear from anyone who was in the areas of the Glen Eden shops, Ken Maunder Park or the Auckland Zoo carpark between 11pm last Friday night and 2am on Saturday morning, Mr Armstrong said.

"If you also know anyone who matches this description and drives this type of car, please contact us immediately.

"We also want to hear from anyone who may have been offered a ride from a man fitting this description, regardless of the type of car he was in," Mr Armstrong said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Waitemata police on 09 488 9754 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
