An explosion in a city-fringe Auckland suburb has terrified residents and alerted police to a suspected P-lab this morning.

Residents at the Buxton St house saw a man run out of the house and south to Walford St, where he tried to jump over the back fence.

The suspected P-lab was situated just 200 metres from Pt Chevalier School and kindergarten.

Senior Sergeant Simon Welsh, of Auckland, said four police officers and three firefighters needed to go through decontamination showers after entering the house before realising it was a suspected P-lab. All were fine.

The man believed to be in the house at the time of the explosion was uninjured, and was likely to face drugs-related charges, Welsh said.
