A teenager who died after a boat she was in with her father and a friend capsized has been named by police.
Eluned Jane Finney of Balclutha, 13, died after the boat capsized in rough weather in South Otago yesterday afternoon.
The incident happened at Surat Bay near Owaka yesterday.
Eluned was onboard with her father and a 13-year-old male friend on what was believed to be a fishing trip.
About 300m from the shore, the boat's engine started to fail and cut out. The boat was swamped before it capsized about 1.30pm, police said.
Acting Sergeant Steve Griffiths of Balclutha police said the man and the boy made it to shore but Eluned was reported as missing.
All three were wearing lifejackets, he said.
Eluned's family "gratefully appreciates all the assistance and support received'', Mr Griffiths said.
Work was underway to recover the boat this afternoon.
The matter has been referred to the coroner.
