Prime Minister John Key is keeping coy about his round of golf with US President Barack Obama last week - but son Max is not so shy.

Max, 18, posted a photo of himself with Obama on Facebook with the comment: "Cheers for the round Mr President."

Within hours the picture had 1180 "likes", with friends of Max Key chipping in with admiring comments such as: "OMG is that Obama?!?!"

A spokeswoman for John Key's office said no details were being provided about who won the round of golf and Max didn't do media interviews.

"The Prime Minister and his son, Max, had a enjoyable day on the golf course with US President Obama and his White House aide Marvin Nicholson. "It was a beautiful course and everyone played some great shots."
