A 27-year-old naval rating has been charged with the manslaughter of a trainee primary school teacher.

Grenville David McFarland, of Mt Roskill, appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning on the new charge. He had earlier this month been charged with assault.

Police laid the more serious offence after Tarun Asthana, 25, died of his injuries at Auckland Hospital on November 4.

He had been on life support in Auckland City Hospital since the attack in Auckland's central city two days previously. He suffered a serious head injury when he fell onto the pavement.

The court charge sheet said McFarland had assaulted the trainee teacher with a closed-fisted punch.

He was released on bail to appear before the High Court next month.
