An exclusive cocktail party was held last night at the Auckland Art Gallery to celebrate the Herald's 150th birthday.

Martin Simons, APN New Zealand's chief executive, and Tim Murphy, editor-in-chief of Herald titles, hosted the gathering.

Invited friends across the media included Sir Julian Smith, publisher of the Otago Daily Times, TRN's Jane Hastings, MediaWorks' Paul Maher and Paul Dykzeul, chief executive of Bauer Media, the multinational German media giant currently seeking clearance to purchase a handful of APN magazine titles.

Labour leader David Cunliffe was there, but Prime Minister John Key sent his best birthday wishes via a pre-recorded video. So too did All Black captain Richie McCaw and Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples.

Editors past and present included Shayne Currie, Mr Murphy, Gavin Ellis and Peter Scherer.

Broadcaster Kerre McIvor was the MC and artist Dick Frizzell, who painted the portraits of iconic Kiwis for the Herald's birthday front page yesterday, said he "had goosebumps when [he] saw them in print".
