A swan managed to knock out power to more than 12,000 Orion customers in Christchurch last night.
Chief Executive Rob Jamieson said the 9.30pm outage, around Burwood, Parklands and New Brighton, was caused by a swan hitting a temporary power overhead line.
He said the sooner they can get the underground cable laid the better.
"Power came on in just under an hour but we know that's quite a nuisance to people. These are problems we'll still have until the end of 2014 when the underground cables are in place."
