Four men have appeared in court relating to the death of a Taupo teenager, but just one can be named.
Wiremu Desmond Birch, 19, was fatally wounded at the corner of Hinekura Ave and Rifle Range Rd early Friday morning. He died on the way to the hospital about 3.30am.
A 30-year-old man appeared before Judge Chris McGuire in the Rotorua District Court today charged with murder.
Two others aged 27 and 32 appeared on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm. All three were remanded in custody without plea.
A fourth man, 23-year-old Kansas Chiefy Angus Tareha, also appeared on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm.
He was denied bail and remanded in custody without plea.
Judge McGuire granted an application by the Rotorua Daily Post to take in-court photos of all the men and denied the first three men's applications for name suppression.
However lawyers for the defendants appealed that decision, which means they can't yet be identified. Tareha did not apply for name suppression.
All four will reappear in the High Court at Rotorua on October 30.
