A Katikati sharemilker who chased and mowed down a black swan with a jet boat on Tauranga Harbour and caused distress to six others has been sentenced to community detention.

Carl Ian Williams, 36, was sentenced to four months community detention and was ordered to pay a fine of $3500 to the Tauranga SPCA when he appeared in the Tauranga District Court today.

The offences which occurred on Tauranga Harbour on December 26, 2012 came to light after a video-tape taken by someone on board the jetboat surfaced and came to the attention of Tauranga SPCA.

Williams had already paid more than $6500 in reparation to the Tauranga SPCA and has paid a $500 donation to a local bird sanctuary.
