A rock climber has been flown to Christchurch Hospital with back injuries after falling down a 10 metre cliff this afternoon.

The man, aged about 25, was climbing near Summit Rd in Le Bons Bay, Akaroa when the incident occurred just after 2pm, emergency services said.

Garden City Helicopters flight coordinator Annette said the rescue helicopter arrived at the scene just before 3pm.

The climber had to be retrieved by winch, however his condition was not serious, she said.
