A police officer accused of assaulting an assistant football referee in Christchurch has not applied for name suppression.
Senior constable Keith Rose, 59, is alleged to have assaulted an assistant referee following a premier league match between Western and Cashmere Technical.
He was off-duty at the time.
It was reported that some Western supporters were upset by some controversial decisions during their team's 4-1 loss at ASB Park on June 29.
Rose was due to appear at Christchurch District Court today on one count of assault, but was given a registrar's remand which meant he did not have to appear before a judge.
He will have to appear in court next month.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Gary Knowles said after Rose was charged after more than 20 witnesses were interviewed.
"Any allegation involving a police officer is taken very seriously and we have conducted a thorough and robust investigation into the incident," he said.
Rose is on restricted duties, and an internal investigation is underway.
