An 18-year-old woman has been abducted and sexually assaulted by up to five men in the Taranaki town of Waitara.

She was taken from outside a house on Cracroft Street and put into a dark-coloured, large station wagon between three and 3:30 this morning, police said.

The teenager was driven towards Waitara beach and was sexually assaulted before she managed to escape.

She ran to a nearby house, and locals drove her home before police were called.

Detective Sergeant Gerard Bouterey said police needed to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicle, as well as the Good Samaritans who took her home.

He said while it appeared to have been random incident, the community needed to remain vigilant and keep its eyes peeled for any suspicious activity.
